Joseph Weissman, M.D., PhD

Dr. Weissman has been practicing neurology in Atlanta since 1989. He is board-certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with additional qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology. Dr. Weissman has a particular interest in epilepsy and sleep disorders. He also sees patients in general neurology including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, muscle disorders, headache and peripheral neuropathy.

Dr. Weissman received an A.B. in chemistry at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, in 1974 and subsequently received a Ph.D. in biochemistry and an M.D. at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, in 1982. He completed a residency in neurology in 1989 at University Hospitals of Cleveland. After completing a Neurophysiology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, in 1989-1990, he joined the faculty and was involved in research and clinical activities, particularly with epilepsy, sleep disorders, and disorders of metabolism in neurology. He joined Neurology and Headache Specialists (currently known as Neurology Specialists of Decatur) of Atlanta in 2001.

Dr. Weissman is an active member in the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is also chair of the Institutional Revenue Board at DeKalb Medical. He and his wife, Barbara Weissman, M.D., a pediatric neurologist, and two children live in Atlanta. Dr. Weissman enjoys road cycling, playing the cello and wildlife photography.

Sara Shuler, M.D.

Dr. Shuler has been a practicing neurologist since 2003. She is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is a general neurologist and enjoys seeing patients with all neurological disorders including multiple sclerosis, headaches and Alzheimer’s disease. She has advanced training in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.


Dr. Shuler is originally from Crawfordsville, Indiana. She received her B.S. in Food Chemistry from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, in 1994 and her M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1998. She completed her internship and residency in neurology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, with an emphasis in epilepsy.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Shuler pursued a career as a professional musician. She received a degree from the Guitar Institute of Technology in 1984. She continues to play for fun and in her spare time enjoys running, any athletic activities, cooking and following current events. She has a daughter and a son who bring her great joy.

Karuna Shah, D.O.

Dr. Karuna Shah has been practicing neurology in Atlanta since 1997. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

She completed her neurology residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where she was the chief resident in her senior year. She completed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at Emory University in Atlanta, with special focus on epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders.

Dr. Shah is a general neurologist with interest in multiple sclerosis, dementia and movement disorders like Parkinson's Disease.

Dr. Shah has training in classical Indian dance-Bharatnatyam. She has a passion for all forms of dance and also enjoys biking and gardening in her spare time.

Lisa Johnston, M.D.

Lisa Johnston is a board-certified neurology and sleep medicine physician. Originally born in Queens, NY, she set her medical career goals at an early age. She was accepted to the Program in Liberal Medical Education at Brown University where she also received a Bachelor of Arts in English. Soon after, Dr. Johnston completed an internship at Rush-St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospitalist in Chicago. It was at Emory University Hospital that Dr. Johnston then finished her neurology residency and fellowship training.

She spent a significant amount of time as a resident caring for stroke patients at Grady Memorial Hospital, where she was on the forefront of tPA administration with its FDA approval in 1996. Dr. Johnston has served as the medical director of the Northside Hospital Sleep Center from 2010-2014. She was an associate/partner of Atlanta Neurology, PC, from 1998-2019 and co-founder and CFO of AcuteCare Telemedicine from 2009 until 2016 when the company was acquired by InTouch Health. Dr. Johnston is married and enjoys spending her time with her son and family, practicing yoga, reading, and photography. 


Stefanie Wetzel, N.P.C., M.S.N.

Stefanie Wetzel is a certified and licensed nurse practitioner in the state of Georgia. Originally from the Twin Cities, Stefanie went to undergrad at the University of Houston and studied Psychology. After working as a research assistant within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center she made the decision to go back to school to pursue advanced practice nursing. She attended Emory University where she received her Bachelor’s in Nursing and subsequent Masters in Nursing.
Stephanie Wetzel, NPC
Since graduating and becoming a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner she has found her passion for taking care of and treating patients with neurological deficits. Stefanie is an active member of several professional organizations including the American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and United Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Georgia. She is pursuing a specialty certification as a Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN) to further her knowledge in the care of patients with neurological trauma and illness.
